“There was a time when words and pictures were one. There was a time, words were pictures and pictures were words.”
— Orhan Pamuk
What do your hands want to do, to learn? How do you collaborate with a landscape through word or image?
The idea of words and pictures being one strikes me each time I return to a 40,000 year old cave painting. The painting is the story, the images are the words. How can we collaborate with a landscape? Use words and image to portray our experience ?
To stop and be immersed in a place is something that used to happen naturally. Perhaps it happened to you as a child? Or even more recently? It seems we are in a moment when it requires carving out the time to be with a physical place. There is a reciprocity that happens when we make a decision to sit and reach out to the natural world. When we are willing to stay, the world reaches back. This is one of the most confirming experiences of being human, and puts us back into belonging. Collaboration with the landscape around Mabel Dodge Luhan House fuels the creative pattern and the work we do in writing, drawing, painting and bookmaking.
